New York protest

Activists plan a demonstration outside a luxury New York hotel hosting a fundraising event for President Obama. Hundreds of protestors will gather on 13th May to express their disappointment that the President appears to have broken his promise to increase funding for global AIDS. They claim that as a direct result of this forgotten commitment thousands of people are denied lifesaving medication.

African AIDS organizations have added their voice in support of the action. The Treatment Access Movement in Nigeria said "Defaulting on the promises now makes living with HIV hell..."

During the Presidential campaign Obama pledged "to provide at least 50 billion (US dollars) by 2013 for the global fight against HIV/AIDS..." yet campaigners say that the reality is that funding has not even kept pace with inflation, falling far short of the levels he promised. Many clinics are already reporting a growth in waiting lists, rationing of drugs and an inability to meet the 'best practice' treatment regime prescribed in the World Health Organization's treatment guidelines.
