Two multidisciplinary drug development teams are developing these new HCV inhibitors. The various phases of clinical trial testing can be categorized as follows:Phase l clinical trials: The development of a drug starts with tests in a few healthy volunteers to see if it is safe to take and to find the maximum safe dose. Phase ll clinical trials: The next step of the development process aims to find the most effective dose and to see whether the treatment is active against the disease on the short term. Phase III clinical trials: The treatment is further tested for efficacy and safety in a larger group of people. All the data generated and analyzed during these clinical trials are compiled and submitted to the regulatory authorities (Ministries of Health) in order to obtain approval to launch the drug on the local markets.
