1 December is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. This year AIDS Awareness Week will begin on 26 November 2007 and end on 4 December 2007. The aim of World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week is to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS, and the need for the development of education and prevention initiatives. It celebrates progress made in the battle against the epidemic — and brings into focus remaining challenges.
Hampshire County Councils World AIDS Day campaign supports the goal of the international campaign: This goal is to accelerate the global response to HIV and AIDS by preventing new infections, promoting equal access to treatment and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS. This goal is in-line with the current National Sexual Health and HIV Strategy which aims to safeguard the health of all British people in relation to HIV/AIDS.
Working Together on World AIDS Day
The United Nations World AIDS Day campaign slogan is, Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise, it is thought that this will be used until 2010. With this in mind efforts are being made to allow as much scope as possible for local adaptation of the World AIDS Day theme. Specific country campaigns can be decided on by local organisations within the overall theme of accountability.
